Kisii County is located in the former Nyanza Province. The county covers an area of 1,317.4Km2 and has a population is 1,152,282. Kisii town is the county headquarters. The County borders Nyamira County to the North East, Narok County to the South, Bomet County to the South East and Homabay county and Migori County to the West.
The main economic activities are subsistence agriculture, vegetable farming, small-scale trade, dairy farming, tea and coffee growing, commercial businesses and soapstone carvings.
They also keep livestock, namely, dairy cattle and Zebu, goats, sheep, donkeys, poultry among others.
The road network in Kisii has bitumen Surface of 73 Km, Gravel & Earth Surface 409 Km.
Kisii County Population
The county population is 1,152,282 according to 2009 Population and Housing Census. This comprises of 550,464 males and 601,818 females respectively. The county has a growth rate of 2.1%. Kisii County population density stands at 874.7 people per Km 2 while age distribution at 0-14 years (45%), 15-64 years (51.6 %), 65+ years (3.4%). There are 245,029 within the county. There are 364,892 registered voters.
51% of population live below the poverty line with age dependency Ratio of 100:94.
Most of the population rely on agriculture. Their main produce are tea, coffee, bananas, tomatoes, vegetables, dairy products, maize, sugarcane.
Kisii County Climate/Weather
The County has two rainfall seasons, Short (September – November) and Long (February – June), It gets rainfall of over 1,500mm per annum with temperatures ranging from 16 0C to 27 0C. It has a highland equatorial climate resulting into a bimodal rainfall pattern with average annual rainfall. It has a hilly topography with several ridges and valleys.
Kisii County Education
In 2007, there were 1,101 primary schools and 363 secondary schools. The total primary school enrollment stood at 273,111 with a Teacher to Pupil Ratio of 1: 41 in Public Schools. While the total secondary school enrollment stood at 60,098 with a Teacher to Pupil Ratio of 1: 27.7 in Public Schools.
The County has over 70 Colleges, Universities and Polytechnics.

Kisii County is a major business hub in Nyanza and it’s the main trading town between Kisumu and Sirare, the border of Kenya and Tanzania.

Tabaka soapstone, river kuja among others can be exploited for tourism in Kisii. There are only a few wild animals like porcupines, monkeys, snakes and various species of birds that live in the bushy river valleys in Kisii.
Once you are in Kisii you can easily get to Tabaka Soapstone quarries, the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Narok, Lambwe Valley Game Reserve in South Nyanza, Kisumu city and the Kenya border point in Sirare.
