Dr. Ekuru Aukot is a Kenyan lawyer and politician who was born 1972. He was a presidential candidate in the 2017 Kenyan general election. The man from Kapedo village in Turkana County was among the first who announced his candidature for the presidency in March 2016 through the party Thirdway Alliance. Aukot is the son of Mzee Aukot Tarkus and hails from a polygamous family of 27 children.

He went to six different primary schools due to frequent nomadic conflicts. Dr. Ekuru Aukot eventually graduated with a Law degree from the University of Nairobi. He graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1997. Ekuru, who was admitted to the bar in 1999, after coming back to Kenya armed with a PhD in International Refugee Law from the University of Warwick in the UK.

His father, Mzee Aukot Tarkus, was polygamous and had 27 children. You can imagine a young man growing up in such a family and in an area where it is a daily struggle for a single child to stay alive. However, due to hard work and determination, he was the first in the Aukot family to join university.
To many Kenyans, Ekuru is the urbane, articulate and firm lawyer catapulted to national fame through his work as the director of the defunct Committee of Experts on Constitution Review. He is also chair of the selection panel headhunting members of a new electoral body, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)

Aukot once taught Constitutional & Administrative Law at University of Warwick, UK and at the Kenya School of Law. He has been a Visiting Law Lecturer on the Law of Refugees & IDPs at School & Faculty of Law, University of Nairobi and at the East African School of Refugees & Humanitarian Affairs, and at Refugee Law Project, Makerere University, Uganda.
Ekuru is also a special advisor to the new Government of South Sudan’s Ministry of Defense.
Ekuru Aukot has edited the renowned African Section of the Refugee Law Reader. He has expertise in constitutional law, policy, human rights, governance and forced migration. He studied for PhD and LLM in International Refugee Law, & Law in Development at University of Warwick, UK; holds Bachelor of Law from the University of Nairobi and Diploma in Legal Practice from the Kenya School of Law.

Dr. Aukot is the Founder & President of Ekuru Aukot Foundation a lobby group that supports education of nomadic and pastoralists boys and girls. Ekuru picked Emmanuel Nzai as his running mate for the first time to make a stub on the presidency through Thirdway Alliance Kenya. He is a new entrant in politics by going for the top seat.
