History of political parties in Kenya

Kenya attained its independence on December 12, 1963, after 43 years as a colony of the British. KANU, which formed the government, was later joined by KADU when the opposition party dissolved
itself voluntarily in November 1964. A year later in December 1964, Kenya became a republic and ceased being a dominion of the Queen England. The first president of Kenya Jomo Kenyatta banned KPU party making Kenya almost a single party state. on August 22, 1978 and buried nine days later on August 31, and Vice-President Moi took over.

Kenya was a multi-party democracy in law before independence and up to 1969 when Odinga’s Kenya People’s Union was banned. The law still provided for multi-partyism until 1982 when Section 2A was enacted, making the country a one-party State.

But in the late 1980s and early 1990s A movement led by Odinga, and other leaders such as George Anyona, demanded the repeal of Section 2A that prohibited the formation of other political parties.  They were joined by influential politicians such as Kenneth Matiba, Charles Rubia and Raila Odinga. Some of them were detained but this didn’t stop their quest. The push gained more momentum when it was joined by young professionals, especially lawyers including Kiraitu Murungi and James Orengo, Martha Karua, and Paul Muite.

The Veteran politicians such as Masinde Muliro, Martin Shikuku, Michael Wamalwa and George Nthenge also joined. On December 1991 the pressure was unbearable for Moi government and the Government gave in and repealed the law that had made Kenya a one-party state. That’s how Multi party politics in Kenya gained traction and the history of political parties in Kenya made.
